Lack of fluid, or fluid contamination is usually what kills them. Whine sounds like a lack of fluid.

Afaik, you'd have the 241 if you have a lever and 246 if you have a button

I had 241 go the same way due to lack of fluid, I never checked the level because I never had a drip or seap, but turns out it all leaked inbetween the trans. Never had any whine, just decided to let go one day.

So we just got a bunch of snow and i was trying to engage in 4LO. I have a manual transfer case. Put the parking brake on, put in neutral, shifted all the way up to 4LO and when I started to drive, the rpms were kindve getting up there. Will it still shift? Didn't go fast enough to really see

Pretty sure 4-LO locks the trans in first gear. Everything in my manuals says not to use it for anything over 15MPH. It's really for creeping through extremely tough stuff, you shouldn't ever need it on the road. 4-HI is what you want for snow.

It uses first and second. But the shift points do change. Definitely not a road gear though.

No need for it unless you're wheeling in sand or mud.

Crawling I guess would call for it too or pulling someone out. It's not a commonly used option though. Handy when you need it for sure.
