Alright so i want to learn how to paint my stuff with something other then a rattle can. I just dont know what to get to start out with. I did some searching already but i dont want to buy something i cant use. For starters ill say im not looking to do it professionally or anything just small projects like my bumper and grill and some rust repair. I found a couple hvlp guns on amazon and im not real sure what to buy. What does the tip size ecffect? Do i need water seperators if i have them on my compressor? Is there anything else other than paint im missing?

This is the gun i was looking at.

Those are supposed to be good guns. I, honestly, paint with HF Purple guns. I buy them when they are on sale for ten bucks, paint one thing with them, and throw them away.

I don't have anything truly nice to paint at the moment, so I'm not super concerned. I did Pigpen with all Rustoleum stuff and HF gun, it looks fine until you're super close. Since it's not going to Pebble Beach, it's great.

Tip size affects how the paint comes out, whether it's splotchy, and how much orange peel you get. So like primer, being thicker, should be spray through a bigger tip, like a 1.8. Clear should be sprayed though a smaller tip, because it's thinner. Again, I spray everything with a 1.4mm HF Purple gun.

You should have a water separator at the gun, alot of water falls out in the hose.

You can see, I have some orange peel, but it sands out easily.

So are the tips interchangable? And what sizes should i get to minimize orange peel? Why throw them away do they clog up of something?

I use the HF purple gun myself though I do reuse it. I have learned to tear it apart and deep clean it. Going by the cleaning instructions is not enough with those guns. And honestly I think all guns should be deep cleaned after painting with them. Talk to your paint store about what temp and humidity you plan on painting in so that they can get you the right chemicals for your paint. They will be able to explain more on that.

As already pointed out you cannot have enough water separators, especially if your running a small to medium size air compressor to paint with. I have a reusable water separator on my gun and one on the output of the compressor as well. They make disposable separators as well.

When you are ready practice on something(s) to get the feel of the gun and how the paint works with it. Then you should be ready to use it on your projects.

watch lots of videos on youtube, they can help teach you how to set up a gun properly.

the tcp guns are ok, i have a set of 3. i would recommend buying the 3-pack straight from tcp global. you get a primer gun, a base/clear gun, and a smaller gun to do smaller jobs with. i've had great luck with them, and if you take your time and set them up properly you can get a pretty decent finish out of them. the more dryers the better, and put a regulator at the gun also.

Well i was just gonna use the compressor at my work. Its a big IR rotory compressor, so ill put one at the start of the air line and one on the gun as well as the 3 wall mount seporators. I doesnt make a whole lot of water so i should he fine. I think im going to go with the tcp 3 gun kit, i think that little one would be about perfect for my grille and other small stuff.

Im gonna get some good practice before i do anything nice. I got a buddy with a 2000 dr civic with a rattlecan paint job now. Maybe a $500 car lol, and he said i could practice on it.

the guy at the local body shop i used to work at said he would show me how to mix my paint so that shouldnt be a problem. Is there a cleaning kit i should get when i order these? Can i spray paint thinner or aceatone through them to help clean them out?

There is only the 1.4mm tip on the HF Purple guns, although they do have a nicer line with interchangable tips. The tips on the TCP guns should interchange with one another.

When you practice, practice like you are really doing it. Sand, clean, use good primer, block, etc. Don't just spray the thing then say, that looks like ****! Because it will lol.

Some people just spray acetone through their guns, I take mine apart and drop all the pieces in a sealable can of Acetone I have just for cleaning things. On the back you unthread a knob, and on the front just unscrew two pieces. It's really easy.

I throw mine away after I've completely primer/color/clear lol. I don't just throw them away everytime I use them. My first purple gun lasted over a year with thorough cleanings, but you can't let them sit at all. I mean, between coats is fine, but if you walk away for an hour while you have dinner, it's much more difficult.

I was planning on doing my best for the first time. Ive ready through the "so you want to paint that truck of yours" thread multiple times so i got the gist of doing it, its just the equipment i was questioning because i really have to clue about paint guns or the necessary equipment whatsoever. Also i was interested in the cleaning techniques because when i worked at the body shop near me the painters were always cleaning their guns. I think i got everything i need in my amazon cart lol. Thanks man

Safety, safety, safety.... get a good respirator, go for a fit test at your local safety supply house before you buy to get the correct size to fit your face. Need to have a clean shave to have the respirator seal correctly.

Nitrile gloves to protect your hands.

One step ahead of the game with saftey actually. Ive got a respirator from back in the day when i used to sand fiberglass/ gelcoat camper caps. Do i still need it if i spray outside?
