Purely hypothetical question here as neither of my trucks have Passlock... Recent issues with my Impala have just got me wondering. Is it possible to remove Passlock functionality on these trucks by simply having it tuned out of the PCM by someone like Black Bear? Or is it more complex than that? What got me wondering is the system from NewRockies Inc designed to disable all GM anti-theft systems. It's like $350 for that kit. Seems a PCM tune would be a much cheaper solution if it works.

99.9% sure it can be tuned out; I've seen people discussing it as if it had been done. Additionally, I would say that a lot of the LS swaps that you see done into a pre-Passlock vehicle has had it tuned out of the PCM.

The NewRockies device is almost surely a resistor that goes inline, just packaged in a fancy module so that it's plug-and-play to make it easy to install. All Passlock is looking for is a resistor of a certain value that has been pre-learned into the system. If your Passlock system is having problems though, their unit may not solve it - if there's a connection problem or other issue causing an improper read on the resistor, their replacement still may not be read correctly and you'll still end up with your no-start condition.

I don't know why their device costs so much. Even a plug-and-play bypass module for aftermarket remote start on a Passlock-equipped vehicle doesn't cost but about $25.

I had a local tuner tune out Passlock, rear o2s, and the codes for catalytic converters on my 99 k1500 Suburban. Cost me $100.

You can tune Passlock out with HP Tuner's and EFI Live. Odds are both cover the PCM in that Impala.
