i learned this past weekend about the multiple starters available for the 94 model silverado with the 350. i never knew these trucks could come with a normal direct drive old school type starter or a reduction gear high torque starter.

mine started giving the signs that it was going out and finally stopped starting the truck on saturday. i did the old sure sign trouble shooting of having my son tap the starter with handle of a mallet while i turned the key which caused the truck to fire right up.

so, i run down to orielly's and tell them i need a starter, they look it up and show my the longest list of possible starters. i opt for the 30 dollar cheapie since i hardly drive this truck, she is my bicycle hauler and i only go to out of town races once a month or every two months so my old truck only gets about 1-2k miles a year put on her.

anyways, i get the starter home, lay out some cardboard behind the wheel, lay out some tools and unbox the starter, and crawl under the truck. i look up to the starter and immediately notice a huge size difference between my new starter and this miniature starter on the truck and already am getting annoyed. i unbolt the starter from the truck and drop it down, slide it out, and compare the two. ruh roh, the body is not the only difference, the input cone is significantly smaller on the old starter. knowing i got the wrong starter, i try and stuff the new one in place anyways but to no avail, it is not going ot fit.

god dang it, i slide out again and carry everything over to my son's cherokee and drive down to oreilly's again. my buddy mike is working so i go over and tell him i have an issue with starter. (he has a 95 silverado) i show him the two starters and he is surprised at the issue, not knowing there was a number of starters either. we get on the computer and check it out and learn of the two types available with about 7 choices between the two types, and go through the part numbers online and find out the 150 dollar one is the match to the one i had (dangit, 150 bucks versus 30 was a bummer). so, we swap and i put some more money up and then head home with the new smaller, lighter, more expensive starter.

i get the starter put in and the truck fires right up with ease. that little starter spun the 350 up like a top, i was very impressed with how quick it fired up.

now, on to the odd ball thing.

for about a month i have had a weird idle problem where the idle would be up at 1100 sometimes and other times it would be down around 400 rpm. since i hardly drive the truck, i was putting off messing with it till after i finish prepping for this 65 mile bicycle race i have on the 17th of september, but the possibility of bad weather made me get on it real quick because i ride my bicycle to work about 11 months a year so bad weather would have caused me to need the truck instead. and another issue that popped up was the truck had a weird hesitation while driving, like the cap or wires were getting spark jump.

when i put the new starter in, all the other issues went away, also. no more weird idle and no more hesitation. maybe the starter was causing a slight ground in the electrical system? i don't know but the only thing that new starter hasn't fixed was the rear diff needing the normal chevy diff work or replacement.

yall every had anything like a starter cause idle or the hesitation problem i was having? i never had

I am currently working through a list of smallish problems with my 1998. I have some diagnosing to do tomorrow, but I'm likely going to be replacing the starter. If it fixes any other issues I'll let you know.

I assume you disconnected the battery to replace the starter. This would have reset the "adaptive strategy". The ECM is now back to the factory defaults. The problems you had may re-appear or the computer was still compensating for a fault that no longer exists and you're good to go. Just diagnose the issues as they come up if they come up.

My truck spent some time in it's former life near the Carolina coast. It has a minimal amount of underbody surface corrosion, and I'm discovering connections that need to be cleaned up. I scored a great starter at a local 'u pull it' lot. I found a 99 Suburban with he engine removed, and someone was nice enough to leave the removed starter on the seat of the truck. It was a high mileage truck and the starter had been replaced recently, so I got a shiny newish part (lighter weight/high torque) for $15.

I cleaned up the electrical connections and replaced the ground straps and got the new stater installed. I don't think it's solved my other issues but I'll find out when I check things out again this weekend.

If you're having issues with your starter, check to be sure that the terminal studs are tight. They can get loose, and then you have a bad connection.
