I'm getting ready to replace my oil pan gasket so I'd like to have all the parts ready for when I decide to do it.

I may replace my oil pump while I'm there, is there anything else I should consider replacing?
Sorry for the noob questions but I'm new to this area of engine maintenance :)

Parts list:
-Oil pan gasket
-Timing cover gasket
-Oil pump (Any recommended brands? or any brands to stay away from?)

I have to drop the front diff, anything I should do to that while it's out? I've never taken one apart but it can't be too hard :anitoof:

Don't forget you'll have to pull the water pump off if you do a timing cover.... Which, if you are that far in replacing the timing chain wouldn't be a bad idea either. So at least add water pump gaskets, and coolant to your list.

But the timing cover doesn't NEED pulled to pull and replace the pan seal.....

Ah cool, I forgot about the water pump.
The temp was climbing a bit high slowly the other day when I had the truck idling with the a/c on. I think I'll replace the water pump and fan clutch.

Cool, I'll have the timing cover gasket just in case.

I second the if your pulling the timing cover, replace the chain, Usually runs better afterwards if its a bit streched, tightens up the tolerances. ive also had 2 chains skip a tooth over 200k miles, the outcome is not fun.

im not sure about the 454 vortecs, but the 350 says the timing cover should be replaced if your taking it off.

I've been looking through my FSMs but can't find anything about replacing the cover, hopefully I won't have to.

I know on the small blocks, it says it right on the cover. I believe its because you cant replace the crankshaft seal on the small blocks..

the original cover is Plastic, Id assume if your 454 cover is Plastic, you may run into the same issue.
