Does anyone know if the obd2 scan tools on scantool.net come with the software to read the live cam timing to set my distributor? Or do you have to purchase the GM advanced add-on software for $80?

Somehow I doubt even the $80 GM add-on will cover that. That's usually something you need a professional scan tool like a Tech 2 to do.

In a couple other threads I have seen ppl talking about the OBDlink MX and being able to use it. They just don't get in-depth about it

Just saw that. I'm sure it's possible somehow, but I tried manually adding PIDs to get a reading for this exact same thing in Torque a few years ago and never could get it to work. Even if you can manage it somehow with a fancy Bluetooth dongle, I'd personally be tempted to just take it to a shop. Much cheaper for a one time thing.

Short of that, if you really just want a tool capable of this stuff... I'd just buy a clone Tech 2 from China. For less than $300 you can have a fully functional Tech 2.

Thanks for the info but I'm kinda on a budget and figured I would try those Bluetooth connection since they are cheaper and I could continue to use it later. There are cheaper ones on there but some ppl on say that the OBDlink MX (which is the higher grade scanner) can read the cam timing. But if you go to scantools.net there is an option to buy different software's with the device even tho it comes with software.

No problem. I'll just say this though... All the ELM327 Bluetooth adapters are exactly the same. The software is what determines how useful they are. I have a $100 PLX Kiwi and two $14 Amazon specials and I actually like the cheap-o ones better. Don't waste your money on an expensive Bluetooth adapter, hardware wise they're all functionally identical in my experience.

EDIT - Also I once paid $60 for DashCommand software to use with my adapters, straight garbage. Instantly regretted that purchase. Torque was $5 and far more functional. Still won't read what you're trying to, though.

Glad I haven't ordered one yet then. Might get one later on jus to read codes and what not. I'll call tomorrow and see what some shops can do it for but do you know approximately what it will cost.

Shouldn't be more than an hour or two of shop labor, whatever that is in your area.

Thanks for your input on this. I'll look into the shop doing it tomorrow. Hopefully it won't hurt my pocket to much cuz I live in a small town with only two shopsa
