I just got a 14 bolt non ltd slip in very good shape w/o the G80. I have a perfectly good complete G80 assy out of a bad 14bolt. is it just swap and play or is there a lot involved? can I just loosen the locks and swap them out? both are GT4's.

It's doable, but I wouldn't personally for one main reason. G80s are trash. They unlock at over 15mph no matter what and are very unpredictable. (Also kind of a nitpick but it's a locker, not a posi)

If you're going to swap carriers, you either need to be intimately familiar with installing/shimming ring and pinion gears to get a proper meshing pattern on the teeth, or take it to a shop that can. That's a lot of work just to have a junk G80. If you really want to do this, I'd save up and buy a real locker or posi first.

I absolutely agree wholeheartedly. There are true posi option's, and true locker options that are far more durable and predictable.

I'll jump on the G80 hate pile. You might read that the one in the 14SF is stronger than the notorious 10 bolt one. I doubt it, since the G80 in a 14SF axle I got from a yard was blown up. Chunks of the "locker" ruined the housing.

Real posi or lockers for the 14SF are kinda expensive, but worth it when you consider how much work it is to do a gear setup.

thanks for the advise. ill keep it a one legger until I get a better unit.

knock on wood I have had very good luck with the 10 bolt and the G80 in it that's in my truck now. 136000 off and on hard miles and no issues ever. changed the fluid w/ synthetic every 40k.

Most people never have a catastrophic failure, honestly. But some people do, and, they just don't work all that well really. On road or off, they're just too unpredictable.

Depending on what you want, a Lunch Box locker, like a Lock right will drop right in and is about 400 bucks brand new. There are Eaton Posi's for them you can get used as well, if you are going more street oriented.

When I pulled my cover on my 14b, I had huge chunks of metal in the bottom of the pig from the G80. It's working fine now, but for how long? I wish I had an open diff lol.

I own two 10 bolt G80 trucks that are still going strong, but I still can't advise anyone to spend any time or money installing one in good conscience. Just a bad design IMO.

If you want to just gain a little extra traction for general driving or light off road driving, and have a stock engine, G80 would be fine. If you want to drive it hard and make 11's wherever you go, the G80 is not for you.

Took me a couple tries to fully understand what you are saying there  but yes, I agree. They are stronger than a 10 bolt G80, but still not as good as a Truetrac.
