So, update. I had a couple of friends who've done more work on vehicles than I come over a few nights ago, to look that the truck. After crawling around under it, they diagnosed that it was the flex plate making the noise after all. Apparently you can feel the flex plate rubbing the bell housing while it's running if you crawl under the truck, something I wdidnt want to do while by myself. Also, as smooth as the enign runs, there was no apparent way it could be something internal. So, it looks like I'm just going to be into this thing for a flex plate!

In light of this, my friends said I could use their garage to complete the repair, so after exams are done, I'm going to put temporary tags on it and drive it over there. In the mean time, I'm going to address the ignition and brake issues it seems to have, as well as fix some unfortunate graffiti scratches in the hood.

In short, I'm excited that this thing won't be as expensive to fix as I thought!
Gotta love it when something turns out to be much cheaper than expected! I recently had bought a 2008 Kia Sportage for $500 because I thought it had a seized engine, oil pan was rotted and had drained all the oil while sitting, and it wouldn't crank over. For the price, I was planning on putting an engine in it. Turns out, the alternator had seized up from sitting for 6 months, and the way the belt is routed, it locks the crank pulley right up so it won't turn. I popped the belt off an it fired right up (topped off with oil of course) I ended up using a breaker bar and got the alt loose. Just needed a $35 oil pan!

Well, work has begun! Been in the shop for about a week, and it's getting there. We almost have the flex plate torn out, tho we haven't seen any visible damage to it yet, which is cause for concern. The rest of the truck appears to be in serviceable shape.

Well, here's the story up to date. We removed the transmission and replaced the flex plate. Then we reinstalled everything, only to find the truck wouldn't start at all! After some fiddling, it became apparent that the starter terminals had corroded. After it started, two things became apparent: It ran as well as it did before, and we hadn't actually fixed anything!! It still has a knock.. talk about disappointing...
Pics are from the last time I worked on, finishing mounting the tranny and trying to jump it after it refused to turn over.

So, here's an update to the project so far: after the failure if the flex plate to fix the knock, I was so despondent that I left the truck sit for two weeks at my friend's house, where I didn't have to look at it. All the symptoms seemed to point to a bad main bearing somewhere in the block. Since rebuilding an engine is outside of my skill level, I started working on the other engine. However, the more I worked on it, the less I liked the idea of sticking this rusty turd in my truck. It wasn't coming apart easily either, making it seem like the truck wouldn't reach completion in time to have it for school in August. So, one night while perusing Craigslist, I came across an ad for a '99 k1500 classic that was being parted out. After speaking with the gentleman, we agreed on a price, and I now owned a third 5.7l Chevy. The difference with this one? It actually runs!! I just had to remove it from the truck it was in.. and that's a story for another day.

So, I have a new used engine ready for my truck now. It's out of a '99 classic that was wrecked with 168k miles on it. The gentleman that owned the wrecked truck decided to part it out on Craigslist, where I saw the ad. The engine appears to be in really good shape, and came with a few hop up parts that are kind of cool. Anyways, one condition of me purchasing the engine as had to remove the engine from the truck myself. To do this, I recruited a few of my friends to assist, as this was my first engine pull. I will admit to questioning the wisdom of that decision when we arrived on a Saturday morning, and the first tool one friend grabbed was the cut-off saw!! "This has to still work when we're done" was my plea, lol. The removal went fairly smoothly, tho, and the engine is now sitting in my shop waiting to go in!

Here's the current status of the truck: it's on my father's barn, where work has begun to change out the engine. I'm kind of excited, because I didn't think it'd get this far! Here it is with its new stable mate, a '75 Ford F600 with 38k original miles that my father uses on his farm.

Having worked on the truck for two weeks, and still not having the original engine out, I've come to the highly scientific conclusion that this is a lot of work!!!

Doing my first engine swap in my 94, certainly more work than I had thought!
Shoot.... these are easy motor jobs... I'm a mechanic for a living....let me tell you..... these ARE the easy ones... nothing to them really.. you have all the space in the world you need compared to some of the engine jobs I've done...

sent from what use to be a great country...
