Hmm, that's something I factor in when buying a vehicle. If nothing else it helps you prepare for the financial shock of getting the vehicle back into shape.

Depends what you want to do with it, as in your case it might just be best to start over with. All of my older car buddies say the cleaner you start, the easier it is in the long run, not to mention cheaper. I'd say the engines are reliable, I've seen the so called "Turd" flat tappet 454 like I've got with just a four speed go over 300k miles. All depends on maintenance. That's my experience though.

Back to your truck though, I really feel that by trying to get the smoke to go away you caused the knock. Oil pump had a hard time pushing that sludge through to the main bearings. Sure, the gauge said you had pressure with your oil "cocktail" but you most likely didn't have flow, which is critical. Reason bearing spin is because things are too tight. Could be that whoever built that engine didn't pay attention to clearances and such.
While i am looking for another engine, would it still be safe to drive this on the road, or will get stranded sooner or later from a dead engine?

I'd make sure you've got a tow plan enabled for when that finally does **** the bed haha. It's days are numbered. I once drove a friend's 1989 Caprice with it's 305 running on 7/8 cylinders for a few weeks before it finally **** the bed on 75 North. Super bad rod knock, very loud. Finally **** the bed when it overheated and threw another rod/debris out the oil pan. Temp gauge was reading fine and I guess the radiator leaked worse than I though. Opps. It was on it's way to have the engine swapped out though so that fact we only had to tow it 20 miles instead of 50 was a bonus.

Reminds me of the 64 Ford Fairlane 2 Dr HT I had. One exhaust valve stem was bent, so the valve did not close properly. I had the power of a 6 with the economy of an 8!

Ran like that for a long time before I sold it, and never did get to the stage where it ticked or knocked.

LoL! The Crapiece ran pretty good too, despite all the noise. If it wasn't for my carelessness I'm sure it would've made the entire trip. It was an overcast day and I thought it began to sprinkle.. It wasn't until I was on the side of the road that I realized the sprinkles were coolant and that this same leak was probably the reason the first cylinder pooped. First time I ever had an engine blow up on me. Was kinda disappointed as it was nothing spectacular. I was cruising fine, then there was sort of a sigh, followed by a release and then I was coasting...

Running 20w50 oil is like trying to use caulk to fill cracks in an engine. Possibly the "rebuilt" engine in your truck had a set of rings and bearings thrown in it, and that's all. Definitely time for another engine or a proper rebuild.

Smoke is common if your valve seals in the head are leaking by... VERY VERY common on chevy motors....

easier to top off oil that is being burned off, rather than letting things not get lubed properly, if you want to limp this engine the longest you can, stick with the thinner oil.

Me burning the off the oil wasn't the issue. I never planned on driving this truck too far. Just to school/work and back home. Thats it. My problem with it was the crapload of smoke i threw out everytime i took off from an intersection. Cops in my area aren't the kind to let things slide. They will pull you over for the smallest thing they find wrong with you.
