My 93 Camaro dynos lower the hotter the coolant gets. You can watch it drop about 1hp from one pull to the next, starting at the 160 degree temperature of the thermostat.

So basically 1-2HP difference total? I can't imagine it would take more than one or two pulls to climb 20 degrees. You're talking differences that are so negligible they could be attributed to standard variation in runs.

My "opinions" are based on facts.

You say that like 99% of them aren't... BBP has been tuning these trucks professionally for years. If they tell me to stick with the stock 195 degree for best results, I'm inclined to believe them.

And that's all I will be saying on this matter.

No, not 1-2 hp total. 1-2 hp between runs. There are other reasons to run the 180 stat and I'VE already stated them.

There is a 5" spacer under the camper so the sewage tank on the camper would clear the bumper. I could just drop the bumper and take out the spacer, but I'd rather make sure the truck can handle any situation and upgrade the truck to meet my demands rather than lower my expectations.

I'm not sure which radiator I have, but being a 95, I'd imagine it is the larger one. I think I might just go buy the biggest aluminum replacement I can fit, I'm sure after 400k miles and 20+ years, a replacement wouldn't be a bad investment. I recently replaced the A/C condenser and have noticed the truck runs a little cooler around town - and that's with the A/C on vs off the last few months...

I'm not completely sold on bypassing the transmission cooler in the radiator - I've read that it is beneficial as a coolant heater in the winter. I agree though that the heat from the transmission is what is overloading the cooling system. I talked to my brother in law, the owner of the truck since about the year 2000 when he bought the truck from the original owners.....his parents. He doesn't remember ever rebuilding the transmission...given its recent performance, I think it may still be original. I'm wondering if the transmission is slipping and building extra heat - I may be starting a new thread for that recently.

I would start by cleaning the radiator. Do a coolant flush as well and re-fill to spec.

I personally think the transmission heat is the culprit, it will add heat to the coolant (as that is what it's using to cool it) and if it's slipping it just makes it worse. Using only an external cooler should benefit your coolant temps, but you should probably get a trans temp gauge as well. The extra "warm up" heat you get in winter is pretty negligible - manual trucks work without the warm up heat no problem.

I was under the impression the idea was to use the engine to warm up the transmission fluid?

No, the transmission builds heat quicker and will warm your engine up faster, at least that is my understanding of it.

My truck came with a factory aux cooler and it barely cracks 100 in the winter. The coolant is warm long before that and it does hit the radiator first.

Just replaced the radiator in my 2500 with a bigger one, side by side comparison.

FWIW, I am running flex lite 280 e-fans, seems like they move more air than stock.

How about a open grill, like a mustang, hehe.

Mybe add some wire mesh behind it to protect things.

Your new radiator is the same one that my 454 truck came with. I know it helps a ton over the smaller version. The smaller one can barely keep up with an unloaded 454 in traffic....

I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure I already have the larger one. My truck is an 8600gvw 2500 with all the cooler options
