Where is it supposed to be and what shape is it?
Dropped the oil today in my rear diff. Magnet was on bottom under carrier and was a "C" shape. Found one jagged piece on magnet that I couldn't tell where it was from. Is the magnet supposed to b a circle?

The one in my rear diff is a circle.
I have a 14 bolt ff rear end and just changed my gear lube. I was replacing my rear diff cover because original was getting quite rusty.

Don't forget to add a bottle of trans X to your gear lube unless you are going full synthetic!

Thanks for your reply. The piece must b from the magnet. Question now is, what caused it to break?:(
Why would you add a transmission additive to your diff.?

That looks like one of the c-clips that holds the axles into the carrier.
Are both c-clips in their proper locations?
The magnet is round, and mine is located down on the bottom of the diff.
Don't add any additives to your reread, it may cause it to slip or not function right.

I'm sure, at this point that it is a piece of the magnet as it is very rough where it doesn't make the circle. I didn't find enough cuttings OR pieces that would make up the difference.

What has me freaked out is WHY it's broke. Something had to move, either the magnet or the carrier.
