My other truck, an 01 z71, the fuel level sender is starting to go, but hasn't changed for 7 years! If I fill it up 100%, it will flop between empty and full for the first 10 miles. after that, it will randomly drop to E while sitting at idle for longer than 10 seconds, but functions normally the rest of the time. I don't want to have to pull the tank, so I hope it never gets worse!

Those gauges are for looks, not information.

Unless you like walking, or replacing fuel pumps, probably not a bad idea to fill it up before it gets around the E mark.

Mine is like that too, when full it goes way past and when it's at 1/2 tank the needle will move between almost empty and 1/2 tank depending on how hard I brake. Also the needle moves slow untill 1/2 tank then it moves twice as fast to empty, we call it a "happy gauge".
I always fill up when it's just above the first red line and then I still have about 7 gallons of fuel left.
