So in the manual it says, "the gauge will first indicate EMPTY (E) before you are out of fuel, and you should get more fuel as soon as possible", does this mean the needle will literally be on the E or does it just mean the orange, because I know I've had my needle buried under the E before (I just saw this in there and was curious)

The gauges are wildly inaccurate. My Suburban goes way past the F when full. At the half tank mark, it really has about 1/3 left. When it's bouncing near E, get some gas or you be walking. It varies from truck to truck, in my experience. You just have to learn your truck's quirks and account for them.

I've just always tried to fill up when they get around 1/8 tank or so. Never wanted to chance it and risk burning up a pump or anything. There's always still a few gallons in there.

God almost all the Suburban owners are in here.

The gas gauge in my 97 will go way past Full when it's slam full, and will randomly hummingbird, it's been so bouncing around so bad it'll go all the way to E when I stomp on it.
And the one time I let it get down all the way to E I was able to drive around 1 day without running out, not smart, cause I could've burnt up the pump (thank god) or run out of gas (better alternative)

Mine behaves the same way; goes another 1/3 tank past full when topped off. My half tank is around 3/4 on the gauge. I don't let mine drop below 1/8 tank. I keep one of these in the jack storage compartment just in case...

I have 3/4 of a tank (as it appears), until I have less than a 1/4, then it'll read full, till its empty. So when mine hits 1/4, I full up. It hummingbirds constantly.

I had a friend who tested it by seeing how far he could go after reading empty and made it 38 miles. He just brought a gas can with him
