My problem is my steering has zero play or slop, it's sticky

I do have a skyjacker stabilizer and the gearbox was an aftermarket heavy duty. I believe it was a redhead brand one

I don't know the age/condition of the skyjacker stabilizer but when those things get dinged and dented or leak and seize they'll cause a real drag on the steering. It Could be worth unhooking and then doing a test drive.

So unhooking didn't fix the problem. I'm wondering if I can just loosen the gearbox adjustment. Is there any cons to doing that?

I'd only back it off 1/8 of a turn initially or so and mark where it was. It kinda sucks to have to mess with a new gearbox but that's potentially the problem.

Ok thanks for the tip. I think its entirely possible that in assembly they just screwed it in a little too tight from the start. Is there anything special like tools or gotchas or anything like that when adjusting? I dont even know where the screw is so I will have to research it unless someone has a picture

Pretty much just break loose the jam nut and then you can loosen or tighten the center adjuster( it's a allen I believe) small adjustments go a long ways! I would mark a stripe across the adjuster and box so you know where it was and then just break loose the jam nut and back out the adjuster a 1/8 of a turn and re tighten the jam nut and test drive and repeat untill your happy with the results. If it's too tight the steering will feel like it's binding( I've made that mistake) but I bet you can get it to your liking.
