Just wanting to see how far the capacity of the stock l31 computer in a 98 will work. 411 Swap may be a thing for the future, but for now I am wanting to do just a cam. Cam to be is the edelbrock 2102. Specs are as follows; 204/214 duration, .420/.442 lift, 112 LSA.

Will be installing an 89' short block, had the engine at home here already and decided to use that one. It is a flat tappet, but transferring timing cover, dizzy, intake, fuel system, reluctor wheel over.

I just wanted to know because wasn't sure how these black box computers were. I've installed a cam in a 411 PCM before, will need a bit of tuning yet. However reasons for tuning include having .224 duration int/exh, and .563 lift. 112 LSA.

I'm sure Slowburb will step in and voice his opinion, and I already know what it is.
Run a 395 Cam if you haven't ordered the cam you mentioned, they're practically drop in from what I remember, but it does take a little bit of modification to run it perfectly.

I'm gonna let someone else explain it better, I've still got a shitton of research to do myself.

Yup. @slowburb

395 for a good daily driver, working a/c, and all that jazz. Bigger if you're not dding, and want something that attracts a lot of attention.

That's a **** ton of lift for vortec heads. You'll need to ghetto grind and run comp cams, or Alex parts, springs and retainers, to run that.

I'm not even sure that will put you in the safe range.

Sounds like he already selected a grind, and it's a flat tappet type cam, not a roller.

Regarding the 2102, it's a standard "RV" cam, which is a 40+ year old design. It has very, very lazy lobes, meaning they're shaped like an upside down V, rather than like an upside down U, which is more optimal or ideal for those heads. Some people prefer aggressive ramp rates or lobe intensities (upside down U) for most area and power under the curve. Others prefer the inherent longevity that may be realized from lazier lobes and lighter spring pressures, at the cost of a few ponies. With an L31 wearing vortec heads, I'd want steepish lobes and max lift would depend on the application like the duration would.

Is this '89 block set up for a roller? Can it be?

The .563 lift cam ( thunder racing 224 ) was installed in my '00 trans am with the LS1.

The edelbdock cam was part of a package deal a guy I know had got me for a decent price. The block does not have any provisions, and mostly went flat tappet for budget build. Short block going into a 98 K1500
