It's to help absorb vibration. It's also not necessary. Lots of guys have removed them and polished the driveshaft underneath.

Not sure what you mean by critical drive line speed? Do you mean the point at which it starts to vibrate excessively?

I hesitate to ask what the abbreviation means?

Greasedog:

So it isn't structural at all???!!
Lovely!

It's definitely not a Canadian thing. Very common and unneeded. I have 4 or 5 out back.

Yeah, critical driveline speed involves vibration. It's not so much the point it annoys you as it is the point it threatens to break stuff. I suspect both are closely related. That said, I was shocked at how low it was on my '88 RCLB. My '98 ECSB doesn't seem as bad despite its longer wheelbase.

I see. Now I get what the abbreviations mean.

I'm feeling more than a little ticked off at the two local "mechanics" who gave me dire warnings of what would happen if I ran it this way.

On the other hand I did buy a 2000 Silverado 4.8l new. On the test drive the truck was smooth. But after about 500 miles the truck vibrated bad at highways speeds. As I was driving at highways speeds and I would talk it would sound as if I was punching my chest with my fist. Took the truck to the dealer 5 times and they could never fix it. I even put brand new Michelin tires on it and it never helped. I honestly think it was the drive shaft but GM wouldn't even look at it. I traded the truck after having it for 1 year on a new Dodge Ram. I just couldn't deal with it anymore. I inherited my Dad's 90 Sierra with 118K miles and still drive it to this day. Truck runs like new. Smooth as butter.

take the wrap off, useless, actual more detrimental than helpful. the wrap traps moisture and rots out the aluminum and weakens it. carefully cut the carbon fiber off and you wont have a problem

it in no way has anything to do with vibration. if anything the amount of center runout with a cover on it would increase vibration. coming straight from AAM and DANA corp back in the day they were testing critical velocity of a Slightly smaller Dia aluminum shaft and running a wrap around it to increase its critical speed/rpm. to which avail none of these truck would ever come close to seeing. the ones that do arent going to be running a stock shaft anyhow.

So I finally found time to get under my truck. The driveshaft is a one-piece aluminum shaft, with an outside diameter of 5 inches. (I actually got 5.09). No wrap at all on the one in my truck, and no evidence that it ever had anything other than a raw aluminum finish. The truck is a 98 C1500 RCLB 2Wd.
