Modern engines don't burn oil like older ones did. The machining is better, the rings and ring grooves are a better material and design, valve stem seals are better, etc.
I really don't see anything wrong with an engine that uses a small amount of oil. That way, you know it is getting some oil on the valve stems, and on the cylinder walls. My 5.7 vortec, with 85000 miles, uses a quart every 3000 miles. I consider this healthy. That is with 5W-30 Mobil 1 in the crankcase.
Even if it started using more oil, I would not switch to a thicker viscosity oil, because I want the quicker flow to the bearings on the crank and cam on startup.
If my engine was using a lot more oil, say more than a quart every 1000 miles, I'd want to know why, and if needed, do a repair.
My final thought on this thread (YEP! another oil thread) is that all the major companies produce a quality product, if you buy at the top of the product range. As has already been pointed out in this thread, it's probably more important how often you change oil, that what brand you choose. My personal bias is that Amsoil and Royal Purple are brands with more hype and price than with any superiority in quality.
