ok so i think im making some progress. theres these bump stops that keep me from turning the tires anymore when the truck is OFF. so i dont think i got all of the air out because of the bump stops not allowing me. when the truck is on the power steering laughs at the bumpstops. so since i couldnt turn the wheels all the way i think that there was still air in the gear box. going to take the pitman arm off and just have at it by turning it and then ill put it back on. will keep everyone updated. i think im close to figuring all of this out.

alright. so as most of these threads end. you guys were right. and the stubborn thread starter (me) is wrong.... sorta. what happened was the bump stops on the suspension kept me from being able to completely turn the box lock to lock without power assists. so long story short there was still air in the very outer edges of the steering gear. so what i had to do was take off the pitman arm (which is really hard in a 4x4) and then turn the steering wheel lock to lock without the engine on like 20 times and then again with the engine on. this solved the overheating problem. but in between that i already worn my pump down to where it makes alot of noise. here comes the 4th pump lol.

edit: fluid got to a max temp of 175F when i drove it hard. i heard this temp is normal. am i right?

I don't know exact temps but I do know that the fluid can get pretty hot. You may want to use AT instead. Won't break down at that temp or foam up.

Power steering fluid is actually more resistant to foaming in a steering system vs. automatic transmission fluid. That's why it is strongly recommended to be used in hydroboost systems vs. running ATF.

Interesting I would not have thought that

DO NOT use the Q/R 454SS steering box in a 4X4.
i know this post is really old but i just got around to seeing your reply. why can't i use the 454ss box in my 4x4? i did and it worked fine after i did the power steering pump mods. is there something i really need to worry about?

It's not recommended due to the higher center of gravity and differences in the front end suspension. Rollover concern is a big part of it.
