I have a 1996 Gmc sierra 2500 with the 4l80e trans. all the forward gears are great....but the reverse... i've had the truck for 3 long, fun years, and ever since ive had it, the reverse has been "messed up" for some reason when I put the selector in Reverse it don't go in reverse unless I rev the motor a little, then it hops in reverse. it doesn't slip or make any noise at all. someone told me it could be weak line pressure? what could it be? its done it for 3 years and it hasn't got worse.

Have you ever changed the fluid and filter in there? A plugged trans filter and/or 20 year old trans fluid can cause this.

4L80E transmissions have problems with worn reverse boost valves and AFL valve causing loss of reverse. This can cause high line pressure and break the band or the reverse servo as well. Sonnax has a replacement boost valve that helps, and a sleeve kit if the AFL has worn the valve body bore.
