I have stock exhaust and it appears to be in good shape, its all there and I do not see any holes or places where pipes are unhooked...The truck was running quietly and then instantly became very loud.

Any ideas? I don't think manifolds would go instantly?

Where did it get loud? At the engine? Under the truck or out the exhaust? Should be pretty easy to inspect the system. Start it up and crawl under it. Put the ebrake on though

Definitely time to get out of the cab, raise the hood, and then methodically go from front to back while the engine is running. As jkeaton says though, you have to be very safety conscious when you do the undertruck inspection.

if its that loud should be pretty obvious. if its more of a pop sound, its probably a donut gasket or something up front. if it just sounds really loud its probably the muffler or in the back.

Everything looks to be in tact, its hard to pinpoint exactly where it is coming from. Doesn't sound like a pop or any exaust leak and it's very loud under the cab. I'll keep you all updated, thanks for the help.

Also I wanted to add I was driving it around 50 mph the truck was quiet and then suddenly it became loud there was sort of a spitting noise like stuff was coming out of the exhaust. It's just my old work truck so I don't care that it is loud but this is almost unbearable loud.

I'll bet your catalytic converter overheated and broke apart inside

Yep. Converter blew apart. If you have a stock muffler, it's probably clogged up a bit. Louder yes, but you could still have exhaust restrictions now that could cause issues.

There's a few possibilities here but almost all are related to the catalytic converter.

1. It got plugged up to the point it couldn't flow anymore and it blew out the downpipe to manifold donut gasket

2. The catalytic converter guts fell apart inside creating a blockage that blew out the same gasket.

3. The Converter guts fell apart and went down the exhaust and have collected in the muffler.

4. Manifold broke. Unlikely that it happened this fast as you stated but it's possible. I speak from experience.

5. downpipe flanges could be rotted causing the downpipe to loosen up and leak. I also speak from Experience. My pipe actually fell off the manifold completely.

Being that it got really loud in the cab I'm guessing a gasket failed and that's why you're getting the excessive noise.

How's it run? Aside from being loud of course. When my manifold cracked the truck lost a lot of power. When my downpipe fell off the truck hardly ran at all. Smoked from. The excessive fuel igniting outside the truck lol.

A blown donut gasket won't be extremely obvious. Tap on the cats with a hammer. See how they sound. Sounds hollow? The innards are probably in the muffler. Sound like you're tapping on a brick? Plugged.

Ok so I found out it is the catalytic converter. There is a vent or some sort of opening underneath it and that's where the exhaust is coming out. The truck seems to have the same amount of power.

So I guess my next step is to replace the cat, just worried if anything got into the muffler.

Below is the pic of the vent or whatever you call if that is open. Sorry it's kind of hard to see...
