Before I install my engine I was thinking I will never have a better chance to change the front and rear seals than now. I found a you tube video on replacing the rear and it looks easy enough. I can not find any info on doing the front on a sbc though. What is involved with changing the front and should I even worry about changing them at all? neither appear to be leaking.

Check YouTube for timing cover videos and that front seal will probably turn up.

If it were me, I'd do that seal and maybe replace the gears/chain, balancer and water pump while you're in there. Maybe a thermostat and all hoses as well. It may be easier to just buy a new timing cover if you don't want to fool with getting it cleaned up or if you nick it getting the old seal out. Unless I'm missing something, you would have (maybe) $300 in it if you do all of the parts above.

Get good gasket sets and don't use the cheap ones that come with the parts. Felpro is a good choice

Is the oil pan gasket new? How about the oil pump?

east302 has the right idea. You will NEVER get a better time to look after these small things that can cause big problems down the road. Easy time to take care of all these little things.
