This will be my first diff rebuild. trying to eliminate humming noise while cornering. I think its just the wheel bearings, but gonna do the carrier bearings while I'm at it. figure ill just get a diff rebuild kit and do the wheel bearings as well. I haven't found much on here for the diff rebuild... can anyone point me to a thread or webpage detailing the job?

was thinking of this kit: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_01404_5002146_3457&pt=01404&ppt=C0363

and wheel bearings from LMC since i'm picking up a few other things from them and they had good prices on the bearings.

Personally I would not bust that diff open unless you're going to put new gears and a new carrier in there. I'm sure your carrier bearings are fine as long as you've kept oil in the diff.

Im leaning towards that as well after thinking about it a bit more last night. But even to do the rear wheel bearings ill have to open up the rear diff to disconnect those C-clips to remove the axle shaft. you're just saying why bother with the rest when its likely fine?

I've always considered that setting up the ring and pinion gears in a hypoid diff was a black art, and if you go ahead with the replacement of carrier bearings, you will have to either learn this, or farm the job out to someone who specializes in rear end service.

Not sure what you mean by a "humming noise while cornering"? Could this be a tire issue? Does the noise change when you get on and off the gas??

Definitely not a tire issue. It's on right hand turns only. If you heard it im sure you'd agree on a bearing. I'm not 100% it's the rear... but pretty dang sure

Exactly. Also like Ironhead mentioned, removing and installing carriers and ring/pinion gears is something best left to a shop who really knows what they're doing.

Hmm, seems very mechanical and simple. Something I could handle. But I suppose that is why people always say to find a real reputable shop for diff work.

But I agree, why throw money into parts that aren't broken. I don't have a money tree here.

But you don't see an issue getting into the diff to remove those C-clips so I can do the wheel bearings?? That seems simple enough

The issue isn't getting them in there, it's meshing and shimming them properly so that they don't make a ton of noise and/or eat themselves up really quickly. From what I've read it's a lot easier said than done.

Honestly I couldn't tell you. I have a trusted mechanic that I take my trucks to most of the time. I'm not much of a wrencher, I just like knowing how the stuff works.

Removing the C clips and the axles to replace the rear wheel bearings will not upset the ring and pinion adjustments, so no problem there. I bet there's a YouTube on removing those C clips. I saw a photo in a thread on this forum, but can't locate it.

Ok, yea I'll look around, but I'm fairly familiar with the C clips. I think I'll just hit up autozone to borrow a puller to get that bearing out easy
