Glad to have found a group of folks that like it as much as I do!

it's the 7.4 (454) with an automatic. I have not dug too deep but I'm guessing it's the 4L60e?

It gets 10mpg on the highway (with or without a muffler!), and around 9.5 in town. I figure it's still cheaper to drive this and buy more gas than have the payment, insurance, and taxes of a new truck.

I know some of you will down on the automatic but I've decided that it's 2016 and I shouldn't have to shift gears!

I picked up some brand new, in the box, Rancho rs9000xl shocks tonight - only $100 for two of them (gotta love craigslist).

I was pleasantly surprised to find the Rancho shocks are silvery gray, not white, so they should look nice on my truck.

I also got the dual high beam kit installed.

Here's what the K2500 replaced. Daily Driver on the left, Family Hauler on the right:

Funny... I was looking through this site and saw someone else got rid of their CCSB and bought a K5. Wish I woulda met them a couple years ago!

Should be the 4L80E, you lucky duck. I'm half-heartedly searching for one myself, to build as a family hauler. I'd definitely rather run gas through an old pickup than pay on a new one for 72 months!

I'm almost positive you have the 4l80e transmission. I just got a 454 truck. Got10.3 mpg hauling 3 snowmobiles. I'm guesing your bigger tires hurt economy.

Yep, it is the 4L80e.

It just occurred to me that it is the much longer pan!

Speaking of which, I will likely be draining the fluid and resealing the pan in the spring. Anything I need to know or avoid?

Is a gasket or RTV recommended on these transmissions?

I did the math, I only drove about 5-6k miles a year in my old regular cab as my daily driver.

The sales tax and personal property taxes for the first three years alone made up the difference in gas for the next 5 years assuming I drive an average of 6k per year AND gas averages at $3 a gallon. If I drive less or gas is cheaper, its even more of a win for the old truck without even getting into the insurance savings and the payment!

I also figure that they advertise new trucks as getting 20 - 21 mpg. Add a lift and tires and you are down in the teens.

There's another reason I don't care about 10mpg.

If I want to get good gas mileage I've got this:

I would add a pan with a drain plug, to make future servicing easier and cleaner and more likely to happen. Dorman makes some affordable steel ones. Use the GM gasket and filter, I get them on Amazon for like 35 bucks.

I agree with your thinking, my 400 is my beater, it was cheap, parts are cheap, it's reliable, idc if it get's wrecked really, it's a perfect urban work vehicle lol.
