i have a 96 k2500 pickup with a 6.5 and 4l80e. im having problems with reverse and possibly third gear.
reverse seems to be slipping. when i shift into reverse, it acts almost normal and starts moving rearwards, but if i give it some throttle it seems to slip for a short while and then suddenly grabs.
the other issue is the 2-3 shift seems to be very slow, or maybe third is slipping during shifting. its a bit hard to tell, as it wont shift until i hit 3500rpm, which is more or less max rpm on my engine it seems. it feels more or less like the shift itself takes too long, and maybe happens a bit late in the rpm range? im not sure..
for a while i suspected the reverse servo piston might be cracked, but then third shouldnt be acting up...? from what i understand, reverse and third share the same clutch, so thats possibly on its last legs?
but, is there any obvious, easy stuff i should try as a last resort before giving up and sending the transmission away for a rebuild?

Id look into a new Torque converter. i have the 350 with the 4l60e and they start to go at high miles. How many miles you running? Transmission ever been separated? Bad trans fluid? Cheap Fluid? Go to the chevy store and pick up some Dexron VI. Its rated for newer Gm rigs with the 6 speeds, but it covers everything below. As far as i know, Trucks like our call for Dexron 3.. But that's discontinued. Id check the fluids. TC usually isn't the issue, but low on fluid is a biggon

Does it kick into gear only after you reach the 3500 rpm and let off the gas? Mine had a similar issue and ended up rebuilding my tranny. Damaged pump reverse servo shot 3-4 clutch and band burned and binded so on and so forth

If all other gears shift fine I have a hard time believing the TC is bad. If the PCM senses a slip condition it will crank line pressure up to max which may be what you feel when it grabs.

What color is the fluid? Is there a trace line of debris on the dipstick when you pull it out? I'm thinkin your direct clutch may be burnt out :(

Sounds exactly like my '00 with the 350. In the last 2 days I found a big change in the reverse it had to Rev a little to grab, done it 2 times after then nothing.. guess I'm in for a rebuild it has 287k (kilometers)
