I somewhat retract my last statement. I'll be running high milage mobile one 10w30 with a k&n filter. It's not available in 0w30 and the 10w30 (with M1 in the HM series) actually has a lower pour point than the 5w30... -54 C. Kind of weird since it goes against common knowledge but likely from the difference in makeup.

Change at regular intervals with 10w30 and forget about it. Don't over think it. And synthetic dosent always mean better.

The general rule is to run the thinnest oil you can while running proper oil pressure. And yes, oil pressure is variable based on bearing clearance and/or oil thickness. I'll add that roller cam engines need less oil pressure than most would think.

Not trying to over think but rather make an informed decision that I'll apply to my newer cars as well. Money's no problem (thankfully I got out of oil last year) but I'd rather spend on something I know that's the best than pay twice because I want to "upgrade" :)

Is there a normal hot idle oil pressure for us?

My caps and manuals say 5W-30, so that's what I put in. They came with conventional, so I use conventional. I try not to overthink this kind of stuff.

Synthetic is all ways better. Science is great.
Do some research over at bob is the oil guy. Check out the ingredients, and uoa results. Youll quickly learn that most "synthetic" oils are exactly the kool aid oil companies want you to drink. I believe redline and motul ( could be wrong) are the only actual fully synthetic group 5 (not from crude oil) that you can buy now. Years ago they started calling crude oil "fully synthetic" after refining it to certain requirements and going through multiple lawsuits for defrauding the consumer. Mobil one I believe was the first to set this precedence, everyone else followed along. Youre right, science is great.

I want to say that the spec for hot idle is anything above either 5psi or 8psi. The factory gauge isn't known for its accuracy, so the only real way to be certain is with a quality mechanical gauge. The anecdotal evidence that I have from my own observations and that of others that drive these trucks is anything between 20psi and 40psi on the factory '95+ gauge.
