I slightly modified the opening and created an adapter plate to fit 5.25" speakers in place of the 4x6"

In my 97 extended cab, I have a pioneer head unit single din with blue tooth. I think it is 50 whats per channel x 4. In the doors I have pioneer replacements, 3 ways. and in the rear, I have pioneer replacements 3 ways. I also have 1 - 10 Sony xplod in a custom box that fits under the back seat. this is only on one side because there is only 1 - 10. I have a pioneer 780 what amp that is bridged to push that 10 sub. I am almost 57 years old. I am not interested in a boom system. Like you I wanted good crisp clear sound, and that is what I have. With out a sub and a amp to push it, you will be missing all the bottom end of the music. The bass will sound empty. Little full range speakers are not capable of putting out good bass. In my wide;s Toyota 4 Runner, I have close to the same set up, but the doors have 6x9 -3 ways, and 6 inch ovals in the rear door's. Same Sony 10, but only a 300 what amp pushing that 10. The amp is to small. It is hard to hear the 10. IMO it is better to go with an amp that is a little to big, than one that is a little to small. You can always turn down the volume on a big amp, but a little amp, will only go up so much. I also installed a system in my daughters 2008 Dodge 4 door. We put a 900 what amp and 1 12 sub in a center consul box that I built. We first put a Pioneer 12. The amp was getting hot, and it sounded like crap. We took it back and got a Sony xplod 12. The difference was night and day. The 12 does push a lot more bass than to 10. Her truck does thump. There is better speakers that pioneer and Sony out there for sure. But for what you are looking for, a set up like I have in my 97 is all you would need IMO. The only thing I may up grade is to put 6x9 in the doors, but this will take some cutting out of the door metal. I may do mine in the future, but as for now, no.

There is a 4X6 to 4" round adapter if you basically want to make your own 4X6 plate speaker or use a set of 4" components with a separate tweeter mounted elsewhere. That's what I did. Nothing else is going to fit in that space very well.

Unplug the rear speaker and see how you like the sound from door speaker, it would be bit louder.

It's best to post up your budget, even if you can't afford new, but would able find deal locally or through someone else.

Otherwise it sounds like youkre willing to spend a little for a bit of improvement which probably isn't worth your time.

This is an option too, I made a 4" adapter plate for the fronts and used 4" rounds

I have a regular cab, 95, and even with the damn speaker in my ear I can barely hear the music, let alone get decent quality sound out of it.

I need to go through the whole truck, from head unit to speakers. Definitely keeping an eye on this thread.

My 98 Regular cab still has the original factory Radio/Cassette unit, with the factory CD player. Right now, I have one door panel off, and I took a good look at the speakers. The tweeter does not seem like total junk, but the 6.5 inch woofer down low is pretty basic. I have a couple of real nice 6.5 inch woofers, with much larger magnets and voice coils, and I am thinking about installing them. My question is whether the stock audio system has enough watts to drive decent speakers, which are probably not nearly as efficient as the ones that came with the truck.

In order to install these woofers, I guess I'd have to get the black plastic rings off the old speakers to help seal the speakers to the door for proper baffling. Is this right? Or maybe make my own rings out of some fairly stiff plastic foam material.

The woofers I have are out of a pair of Energy house speakers that are surplus to my needs. I might even be able to fit the tweeters and the crossovers, but I have not really looked into this yet.

I just realized that I kinda hijacked the OPs thread, so apologies, but I hope the answers help everybody who wants to improve the audio in an old GM400T.

Been looking into Upgrading my audio system as well. Has anyone successfully monted speakers on there door panels. Found a kit online that I am going with. Just wanting to have good door speakers and a head unit I can hook my phone up to. Pretty simple set up. The sound quality from the tape adaptor is not cutting it for me anymore.

I trashed the rings on my factory speakers trying to get them off. I guess I wasn't being gentle enough. I just used some 6.5" speakers and drilled some tiny holes in the doors to use the screws that came with the speakers.
