I was just about home after a 400 km drive when my transmission decided to blow all of the oil out of the dip stick hole. I was wondering if anyone had experienced this problem before and what the cause could be. Ive checked the breather tube on top of the trans and the tranny cooler lines for blockage but they all seem to be in working order. The truck is a 1998 gmc sierra with the removable bell houising 4l60e transmission

I'm not a 4L60E expert by no means, so if I'm wrong - someone correct me. lol These are just things I remember reading about when I saw the same problem in a friend's truck.
If you're 100% sure the vent tube is not clogged or the transmission hasn't been over filled, what color is the fluid and does it smell burnt? Overheating can cause this.
I'd also check the fluid level in the transfer case. IIRC, the seal between it and the transmission can go allowing fluid to flow between the two.

yea i checked the transfer case and it still has all of the gear oil in there. the trans was not over filled it was right under the full hot line last time i checked it with the tranny hot. The fluid that is sprayed all over the frame of the truck looks red still lol. I was almost wondering if it was an over heating problem?? Any way im gonna pull the pan off and replace the filter and go from there.Oh and i pulled the dip stick out and it dont really smell burnt i might be able to tell more once the pan is off.

Is the fluid milky? If the cooler in the radiator went it could have filled up the trans.

The transfer case should have atf in it... Not gear oil... But if you checked it and it was fine, that's besides the point.

I run gear oil in the transfer case no big deal and i figured out my problem, the filter was very dirty so i believe it caused the tranny to get hot and ended up blowing the lower trans cooler line off. So i got rid of the factory plastic clip junk and ran a rubber hose and fitting in its place. The fluid in the pan looked dirty but there was no chunks so it should be good to go for another 200 thousand miles
