My roommate and myself have searched forums (this one and others) for hours and can't find my particular issue and I'm hoping one of you transmission wizards could answer this for me. I'll give you a brief rundown of the situation before the question.

My transmission died a week ago after being (half-assed) rebuilt in March. Suffice to say I got screwed, and come this time around I didn't have the money to turn it over to another shop, and my roommate and I opted to rebuild it ourselves. My roommate is a mechanic but doesn't do a lot of transmission rebuilding and I mechanic mostly on heavy machinery and as a hobby. Anyways, we nitpicked through it, corrected the problems the previous rebuilder caused, replaced as many hard parts as I could afford and needed (pump, reinforced sun shell, and overhaul kit mainly), and till I took it out for a test drive, we saw no issues. It shifts beauuuuutifully to Reverse, 1 to 2, 2 to 3, but from 3rd there's nothing. All downshifts are smooth as butter too. Roomies Modus reports the computer is commanding a 4th gear shift but there's absolutely no mechanical response or attempt to shift. No noise, no nothing. TCC lock is occurring while cruising in 3rd but the truck just rides in 3rd as if 4th doesn't exist. We've double checked what we can without dropping the pan such as the servo piston orientation, O ring condition, electrical plug pins, and can only come up with one possible cause.

TL;DR My question is this; if the 3-4 relay in the valve body were accidentally put in backwards, would that cause the shift to 4th to just never happen? Is there another part that could be causing this that we're not considering?

Thanks in advance!

Update:

For anyone interested in this issue; Good news! Yes, the relay can cause 4th gear to not exist. Its a silly, overlooked orientation (as you can see in my included pic) and a relatively easy fix, but damn it was a little stressful. Bad news is my new band broke during the test drive and now I don't have 2nd or 4th.

Anyhoo I hope someone got a good giggle out of this, my roommate sure did.

Jeez, so you gonna tear it apart to replace the band? Will it skip 2nd and go the 3rd? I'm not a fan of slushboxes but I doubt my knee will be willing to depress clutch pedals when I'm 60...

There will be many things you can't depress after 60 ! Although my wife says I do a good job depressing her !

LOL Yeah it skips second, goes to third, and then neutral winds when it attempts 4th. If I put it in 2nd manually, it behaves like neutral when it goes to shift. I had full range of gears for about 10 minutes before I heard a clunk during a 1-2 shift and lost 2nd. My only options at this point is pull the front of it open and replace the band, fully tear it back down and reinspect everything and THEN replace the band, or... sell the truck as is. :33:

Well if I'm not mistaken, once you yank the pump and drum the band is staring you in the face. Still have to excavate the trans to get there though.

Hmm, I hate doing the same thing twice, especially after I was just there.
Ford AOD's do that when they lose overdrive, which they all seem to do after some time.
1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to ..neutral

4L60 can do that too. I broke the case at the servo and it was able to find 2nd and 3rd, but not 4th. Happened as I was headed to buy my Camaro. I still wonder if it was an omen, that car has been a lot of work.
