Why not get the shorties and the length of 3" pipe they sell optional as well? Hell you can just do the tune now with EGR and cats deleted without physically deleting them. I'm leaving stock cats on my dually, that piping is plenty big.

Hell I didn't realize Jegs sold it with the y-pipe; is that what you're referring too? I know the cats are high flow, I'll probably hollow them out if I don't delete them,

You haven't done the 0411 to your big block yet have you? I started looking at all the links again and remembered how much of a pain in the ass it looks.

The only asspain is getting the tune right. Performing the swap is incredibly easy. Mine is not done yet, but it's next on the list. I have the 411, just need to install it and tune it.

What's all this about a transmission plug I'd have to splice or re-wire a section of it? I don't see anything about it in the 0411 thread?

Unless mine were somehow not stock, there's nothing to even hollow out. I did remove mine anyway, but that was mostly because I found it easier to go all new then try to mate the 3" mid pipes with the stock exhaust.

I need some advice on a 454 tune; my father was asking about a Black Bear tune for his 99 C3500, and I'm thinking about buying a BB tuned PCM for my 96 for a little while I figure out the 0411 swap for my truck in the future. My dad wants to know what all they can do to rewrite the stock tune, like timing curves, deleting stuff off the PCM; which searching in my exhausted stupor last night I couldn't find a clear answer as to what all they change.

Is the programing is the same from 96 to 99/00 for the 7.4L? And what all should I have them update/modify tune wise?

Nearest Radiator shop said they could do it for $100 bucks, but it'd be about a week before they could get to it.

So I've got a Murray radiator coming in tomorrow; I was mulling around on whether or not I should do the waterpump, but I decided to just put in the new rad and maybe figure out a fan upgrade.
And a side note, my local Napa sucks ass. The online page said they were opened until 6; I get there around 5:15 or so and there's not a soul to be found. Thank god the new O'Reilly's had the sensible dudes working the counter.

I kicked around and found a thread about the S10 fan (11-blade composite fan) and I know a member on here who had a 98 454 swapped an 11-blade fan from a 350 onto the fan clutch on his truck; are the bolt patterns all the same between small block and big block for fans? My truck runs at 210 or a tick over, some of the stuff I've read states that normal, but I'd like to run it a bit cooler if I can manage.

When i had my 454 suburban it never got over 180??? with a factory fan and factory style rad. Had a 190 thermostat in it too. Somethings not good there bud.

Since HP Tuners doesn't support the 96 I can't say exactly what can or cannot be modified in that tune, I would assume that the differences to the 98-00 are minimal though (someone please correct me if they know otherwise).

So things you can change. Main Spark Table (I'd imagine he'll just bump up the entire thing), maybe change the IAT spark modifier table so it doesn't pull as much timing, PE enable and EQ ratio settings (make PE come on sooner and maybe lean it out a touch), reduce or remove torque management, change the transmission setting, turn off egr, disable rear o2s if you want them gone. These are the things that are commonly changed via mail order tunes, as far as I know.

There are plenty of other things that can be adjusted, but they're primarily things you'd change to correspond to physical changes and unless you have experience with that exact mod, they're pretty hard to adjust for via a mail order tune and need to be tuned in person.

Supercharged, chime in with anything I'm missing.

Had a little discussion with my dad about putting headers on my truck; he asked my why I would go to all the trouble, explained possibly warping the valves from the rapid dissipation of heat and such; would I really run into any issues with the engine's internals if I ran headers??
I tried researching to see if anyone with a 454 ever caused damage to the engine by running headers but I couldn't find anything.
