1500 leaf pack (6200 GVWR) is 3 + overload.
1500 HD pack (6600 GVWR) is 4 + OL.
2500 LD (7200 GVWR 6 lug) is 4 + OL but I hear this OL is stiffer than the 1500 HD.
2500 HD (8600 GVWR 8 lug) is 5 + OL.
3500 SRW I'm unsure of, but they do have 9200 GVWR. My dually (10,000 GVWR) has a 6 leaf pack with only a lower overload which I thought was weird because the frame has the horns for the upper overloads. Then I just saw a dually in the boneyard with a 5 leaf pack and upper/lower overloads same 10k GVWR. That's what I know to exist out there. My half ton has the 7200 GVWR springs out back and it raised the truck an inch or so and made towing and hauling a lot better.

Timbrens would surely help and less involved then air bags. Heavyier leaf springs will make your truck ride like **** when empty.

If your serious about keeping your horses safe then you need to get serious about getting a bigger truck capable of hauling that load.

I used to tow with a truck just like that but it actually had a v8, 5 speed and ld2500 rear springs. Still a nightmare so I went out and bought a 2500hd and added a leaf to the spring pack. I can now tow safely with confidence

the short wheelbase only exacerbates the problem........ie: fulcrum(rear axle) is much closer to the front wheels.

also...my '98 rcsb (117.5" WB)has the JB5 brakes, 6,400 lb GVW. cargo weight rating of 1,035 lbs.

i want to swap in a SF 14 bolt and get the JB6 brake valve, that's a 7,200 lb GVW. i also have 4 plus the overload rear leafs, but i think the PO did that.

I agree with all this. There's such a thing as not enough lead in the pencil.

I want to add a little extra carrying in the bed so I am just going to hit pull a part and grab some off a 4x4 1/2 ton or a any 3/4 ton. it sounds like that is what you want to do, too.
since everything bolts in, next time you are near the junkyard, drop on in and grab some. or add some of those helper springs form the autoparts store, your call.

The helper springs from the parts store do almost nothing. Theyre rated at about 1/3 what my trailer weighs (2 horses and an all steel trailer) and theyre known to be worthless in general. Youll want to be careful what springs you grab because theyres a metric **** ton and it sounds like for your purposes you could go overboard quick.
Also, not sure where youre from, but theres 2 problems i have with the u pull its here in Illinois. 1) everything is COVERED in rust. And 2) its colder than a witches ***.

Not a lot of rust on them here and they show three trucks i can pick from at the local pnp so i should be good.

I will admit, my truck will be pulling a few little things that are heavier because my dad wants to borrow it every once in a while. His little colorado won't pull the bobcat or mini excavator
