some guy is gonna pop up and say they yanked a gen 6 7.4L out of a motorhome and say it had a flat tappet just to mess with you. thats why I Specified Vortec 7.4L

16mpg, thats pretty good.

seems like that cam was made for the 96-00 7.4l motors, the lift is much lower then the one I was looking at.

You're right, I should have been more specific. To my knowledge all L29 and L21 motors came roller.

Keep in mind that 16 mpg was on fairly flat highways at no more than 65 mph. When I get into a lot of hills the average is probably 14, and if I go much over 70 it starts dropping off fast due to 4.10 gears and stock tires size.

Did you mean the one you were looking at had lower lift? Honestly, the one you're looking at seems like a good option for decent performance and good low end torque. I'm having issues with attaching pictures. The cam you link had .285" lobe lift, the one I mentioned had .301".

About eight years ago I installed this cam in my 454 due to lack of performance after I bought the burb.It sucked towing my toy hauler and I was very disappointed.I know the 454 was a replacement engine @ 94,000 miles(don't know why).I was hoping for better pulling power going up hills and in mountains. It is better than stock but not by much. The cam was recommended by a now out of business performance shop in Chatsworth,Ca.(not far from me)so I trusted them.I also got new lifters.Later I also did the adjustable rocker retrofit. So,what's your opinion on this cam?did I waste my money?

Just searching the part number and reading the description sounds like it is not ideal for towing.

Per Summit Racing

"These Dual Energy cam and lifter kits from COMP Cams have more exhaust duration and lift than intake. They are designed for applications where a slight sacrifice in low-end power is acceptable for an increase in mid and upper-range rpm horsepower. These kits are ideal for use with restricted exhaust port cylinder heads, or applications using a full-length exhaust system."

Yep,sounds like my cam.I call it boring.I like the one you spec'd :waytogo:

With the addition of roller lifters and roller rockers there's more torque and horsepower to be had.

Theres a bit of a budget involved here, hes not exactly giving those cams away.

Just trying to make a descent Tow Beast out of her. not a race truck.
