i am running JBA on mine and i am happy with them i got their stanless ones, came with decent hardware...wished i would have upgraded my gaskets though. If you keep your stock Y pipe your ot improving much thats the weakest link in the system

My main reason to replace wasn't for gaining alot.... my stock manifolds were all cracked and leaking... shorties where the same price as stock manifolds so that's what I opted for.

sent from what use to be a great country...

I had a pair of Flowtech mid length headers on my truck, not shorties I know but I will way in anyways. They were a cheaper set of headers, the flanges were a cheap welded mess and the collectors being just the standard 3" 3 bolt flange were garbage.

Bolts always loosened off and gaskets always leaked. Rubbish

I wish I knew what a old friend used for shorties on his project, the bolts always kept coming loose on it, so rule 1 is getting locking header bolts. 2 both styles were actually fairly easy to do spark plugs on.

I would do ceramic too, and maybe someone has run Gibson or JBA headers? Pricey...
Had a question on you flowtech headers. I purchased two sets of flowtech headers. Shorty black painted and Shorty Ceramic coated. But the flange looks different on each header

So Andrew 89/98, the flange on the ceramic headers are about what mine looked like, but waaaaaaaaaaay shittier. The flange itself was about the same thickness but the actual sealing flange around the port was a mangled welded mess, leaked all the time. Those black painted ones you have there have a thicker flange by the looks and should avoid distorting when tightening.

It also looks like the ports are different shapes on both headers, depending on which one you choose and which cylinder head you have you could have problems I bet. Which is yet another reason headers can suck, not necessarily always suck but could suck

That's why it pays to spend a little time mounting headers, get a good matching flange, lock bolts, ball flanges for collectors and a flex pipe after the y-pipe
Best of luck to anyone running them

EDIT: Also, if I had pics I would have done comparison shots like what you have. Makes discussing things far simpler

Yes the same thing I said, they are both flowtech and I figured they'd be identical other then the coating. I'm waiting on a response from Holley. The rep said they should be the same other then the coating but was not positive and would get back to me.

Sooooo, What's your question??

The black headers flange is flat from end to end and thicker. The ceramic headers flange is raised on the exhaust port areas, making me think this will leak being the surface is only 1/4. Is this normal was my question but forgot to put that in there lol...

I just got done installing JBA shorty headers with the ceramic coating on my '98 V6. So recently I haven't even driven it yet, just started it up to check for leaks.
On both sides I had to enlarge the rear most hole for proper alignment. Getting the EGR tube off the original manifold was a pain as was the flanges that mate with the crossover.
