My Check Engine light has been on for a while and with it being Thanksgiving, I convince my uncle to pull out his OBDII scanner and check it for me. His scanner came to the conclusion that I'm running rich (which explains a lot now). He thinks it might be the fuel pressure regulator but when we went to check it he realized that it's internal. We also checked the air filter and o2 sensors. Is there any other things to check before we drop money on the repair?

The engine is a 5.7l V8 350ci Vortec 5700. It's the one with the spider injectors.

What was the code(s) that set the light. We need that info to give you proper help. Without it we are just guessing.

Oh god. No I dont have the codes. And it's going to be hell to convince him to do it again. All he told me was that it said running rich and showed me on the scanner where it said for both banks that it's RICH.

The fuel mixture is controlled by quite a few expensive sensors. So unless you want to just start throwing parts at it hoping to fix it we need the code.

Any auto zone or advance will check it an give you the codes for free.

Report back and let us know what the codes are. We'll be able to help you a lot more when we know that.

just taking a stab at it but you may wanna check your map sensor

This could be true. Mine was running rich when the vacuum line to my MAP was cracked, but it'd still be better for you to pull the codes.

Alright. Big update. Still running rich, but we've narrowed it done further.

Got the codes tonight.
  • P0172 Rich Bank 1
  • P0175 Rich Bank 2
  • P0300 Misfire

Then we did some more investigating. We did a fuel pressure test. It sits at just under 60 running, which he says is fine. When we shut her off, it slowly drops to 20. "Well, it might be your fuel pump. But let's check on that misfire." We look on the scanner at the individual cylinders. All cylinders have a misfire history, but cylinders 5 and 7 actively. We stopped at the conclusion of a possible crack in the spider.
