I have a 1999 Tahoe with the push button 4wd (it has 2 hi, auto, 4 hi and 4 lo selections). What model of transfer case is this? I've been told it's a 243 and I've also been told it's an autotrak. Anyone know? The reason for my question is I'm doing a service on my truck and need to know what kind of fluid to get

That'd be the NP246 (AKA AutoTrac).

NP243 was electronic w/o the Auto feature. NP241 was the manual.

For future reference there is a small circular metal plate on the backside of the transfer case. That will have the model number stamped into it.

Not quite sure. But I think you're stuck with the AutoTrac fluid.

Haven't messed around with those cases too much so I can't be certain.

Hopefully someone else with a bit more knowledge will chime in.

I've read in a few places that you can use regular synthetic ATF with no problems, but of course GM recommends their fluid with the additives. I personally wouldn't take my chances and just pony up for the expensive dealer only blue autotrac fluid.
