Are the coolant temp sensors the same?

Ok thanks. I'll have a look under my dash. I'm looking for a solid ground point for my trailer brake controller.

    Time to pick a color

Had my Emerald Green Metallic Suburban completely repainted and some minor dings fixed. I'm biased, of course, but think it's a great color. This is right after its last washing. Cleans up pretty good, I think. An action shot, but dirty:

Don't suppose you would have a picture of that?

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

Decided to keep digging, and found it. Just shy of 24" down, in some pretty hard digging. Those two stakes mark the line according to dowsing. The actual water line was less than 3" off of that line. Close enough. She also saved her cousin the electrician a trip out here to trace the...

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

Thanks! I'm feeling a whole lot better about this now that the route is sorted out. I didn't realize that. I'm thinking we'll wind up with <360º, but this is good to know. The trench will deflect slightly at a couple of otherwise straight sections, but not by much. Hopefully not enough to make...

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

Yesterday I took a step (admittedly small, but a step nonetheless) towards running power to the garage. The short version is that I actually dug a hole. Broke ground, as it were. The long version: First off, we figured out a much better route through the garden. It will bypass most of the...

    Coolant temperatures while towing

Mine has the Z82 package but only has a five blade fan. It sounds pretty much like the one in the video, though. Except for the idle. Mine doesn’t sound that good.

I know, right? But, that's what they said! AC Delco GM original, no less.

I mentioned this in post #56. The three I looked at used distilled, deionized, and “specially filtered.”

Decided to build a garage. Now the fun begins.

A very long overdue update and thank you for this little gem: Just to let you know, I ordered this when you first mentioned it, charged it up, and it’s been sitting on my desk since under a pile of stuff. Today I remembered that I had it and finally clipped it onto my hat to look under the dash...

    Coolant temperatures while towing

Now I'm wondering what the blade pitch is for the Dorman 621111 that I ordered yesterday. My existing fan clutch is the original, afik, but is functioning normally according to my preferred shop. I have a GM Genuine Heavy Duty in reserve.

Ah well - I ordered the Dorman from RA earlier this afternoon, and it's already in their shipping queue. It ought to be an improvement over my stock fan.

    Coolant temperatures while towing

That's impressive - 176K! I wonder if there's any difference between the 96 and 98 transmissions. Do you have a "tow mode" or something like that?

    Coolant temperatures while towing

I couldn't hear it from inside the cab, but could hear it from the outside. It's not particularly loud against the background sound of the regular fan combined with the alternator. Come to think of it, I also had the AC on. The fan was spinning pretty fast, though. I shone a flashlight on it...

    Coolant temperatures while towing

Good to know. That's probably about 1500 lbs more than we're pulling when our camper's loaded (It's 5500 lbs dry weight). The guy that rebuilt our trans recommended towing in 3rd, basically saying it would last longer that way. Probably because of the rolling hills around here, which are long...

    Coolant temperatures while towing

Thanks for this! So, just to be confirm, this fan will fit a ‘96 7.4 with a four bolt fan clutch? Here's what mine looks like: Edited to add: RA has three fans that come up under that part number. Does the Dorman hold up well, or should I consider the more expensive VDO/Continental?

Thanks. That makes sense. I ordered the gm/ford/vw kit anyway, before your response, since my GF has a Ford Ranger that probably needs the cooling system flushed too.

    Coolant temperatures while towing

Thanks! What you said makes sense. I'm sold. As for the Lisle funnel, the one you linked has the standard adapters. They list one with a GM adapter, right next to it. Should I go with the GM one, or will the standard set work?

    Coolant temperatures while towing

I thought it might be helpful to follow up on a few loose ends in this thread (which I also discussed in my build thread): The PO confirmed that this beast does in fact have a new radiator, along with new upper and lower radiator hoses, plus a new radiator cap. So far so good. My plan is to do...

96 GMC K2500 Suburban Restoration (with a couple of mods)

After one more pass through the PO's receipts, I managed to find one for the new radiator. How I missed it is beyond me. Ah well. The radiator, radiator cap, and the upper and lower hoses were replaced, so those items should be good for awhile. No mention of a thermostat, however. So my...

96 GMC K2500 Suburban Restoration (with a couple of mods)

Yesterday I verified that the auxiliary fan does work. Not sure at what point it comes on, since it's pretty quiet. When I returned home from a 25 mile round trip (no interstate), the coolant temp was just below 200º F. I parked and let it idle, and sure enough, the fan was spinning. It...
